Devils Postpile National Monument is located in the heart of California's Sierra Nevada. The Devils Postpile formation is a rare sight in the geologic world and ranks as one of the worlds finest examples of columnar basalt. Its columns tower 60 feet high and display an unusual symmetry, together they look like tall posts stacked in a pile, hence the feature's name. Radiometric dating indicates the formations were created by a lava flow at some time less than 100,000 years ago.
Another wonder is in store just downstream from the Postpile at Rainbow Falls, once called a gem unique and worthy of its name. When the sun is overhead, a bright rainbow highlights the spectacular falls. The monument is also a portal to the High Sierra backcountry; some 75% of the monument is included in the Ansel Adams Wilderness. At 800 acres, Devils Postpile National Monument may be considered small by some, yet its natural and recreational values abound.

Very striking image of this unique rock formation and landscape. I've never seen Devils Postpile National Monument, so your photo and description is very informative. It definitely will be on my list of places to see in the future!
