Description
Original Fine Art Photography by Donna Kennedy...
Photographed in Camp Verde, Arizona
About a week ago while walking around the desert landscape I happened to see a small round cactus all by itself with a few shrubs and prickly pears. I thought it was so cute, about the size of a tennis ball. When I got back home I kept thinking about it, and decided to go back with my camera.
Beehive cactus, (genus Coryphantha), genus of nearly 60 species of cacti (family Cactaceae) native to western North America and central Mexico. Several species are cultivated as ornamental plants, and some are listed as endangered species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Other common names are Pincushion and Spinystar.
Beehive are small, squat plants that usually don't grow more than 6 inches in height, it has clusters of 1 to 24 stems, each with spirals of conical bumps. They can be ball or barrel shaped, and are native to the warmer regions of the United States. This small cactus is known for its beautiful purple/pink flowers. It can be hard to handle because of its sharp spines.
