Two Swans enjoying a swim around the pond at Caughlin Ranch, Reno Nevada
The mute swan (Cygnus olor) is a species of swan and a member of the waterfowl family Anatidae. The exotic Mute Swan is the elegant bird of Russian ballets and European fairy tales. The name 'mute' derives from it being less vocal than other swan species. Although they're numerous and familiar in city parks and in bays and lakes in the Pacific Northwest, Great Lakes, Northeast, and MidAtlantic, Mute Swans are not native to North America. This large swan is bright white in plumage with an orange beak bordered with black. It is recognizable by its pronounced knob atop the beak, which is larger in males. America's heaviest flying bird the swan needs at least a 100 meter-long runway of open water to lift off, running hard across the surface, they almost sound like galloping horses as they generate speed for take off. Give plenty of space to nesting Mute Swans, they can be extremely aggressive and frequently attack canoeists, kayakers, and pedestrians who wander too close to a nest or chicks.
