On the northwest corner of Washoe Valley, Nevada in the shadow of our new super highway I-580 is a unique historic home that looks like it is from another era. The Winters Ranch, also known as Rancho Del Sierra was completed in 1863 and was a grand mansion for its time. Mark Twain visited in 1864 and filed a newspaper dispatch describing the home. Both Twain and Winters knew each other well as they were among the handful of prominent men in the Washoe Valley/Virginia City area at the time. This estate once covered six thousand acres and included an orchard, horse race track and extensive livestock herds. The house was built by Theodore Winters who had become wealthy from part ownership in the Ophir mine, located on the Comstock, which lies across this valley. The energetic lifestyle of the Winters family had a substantial impact on Nevada's social events, community services and state politics. The home and property stayed in the Winters family from 1858-1953.
