In September 1956, Elvis appeared at a homecoming concert in Tupelo, MS. Before the concert a parade was held in his honor, but his manager (the Colonel) vetoed the suggestion that Elvis should ride in it because of security concerns. Main Street was decked with a giant banner that said, “Tupelo Welcomes Elvis Presley Home”. Elvis’s parents, Vernon and Gladys were there to see his triumph-though Gladys later told a friend that it made her uncomfortable to remember how poor they had been when they lived there.
For this concert, Elvis wore a heavy blue velvet shirt that Natalie Wood had made for him by her own Taylor-despite the fact that it was a very hot day. He teased the crowd, walking close to the edge of the stage and leaning down so the fans could just touch his fingers. One time he misjudged the distance, and lost one of the silver buttons from his shirt. During the concert, Tupelo mayor James Ballard gave Elvis the key to the city and Mississippi governor JP Coleman came on stage to praise ‘America’s number-one entertainer'.
