Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) These beautiful birds are North America's most common hawks. They are found all over the continent, in Central America, and in the West Indies. Red-tailed hawks are known for their brick-colored tails, but there are more than a dozen subspecies of various colorations, and not all of them have this characteristic. These birds of prey are also known as buzzard hawks and red hawks. By any name, they are keen-eyed and efficient hunters. The eyesight of a hawk is 8 times as powerful as a human’s. The wingspan typically can range from 3.4 – 4.8 ft.
Hawks are carnivores (meat eaters) that belong to the category of birds known as raptors - birds of prey. They have strong, hooked beaks; their feet have three toes pointed forward and one turned back; and their claws, or talons, are long, curved and very sharp. They often perch on telephone poles and take advantage of the open spaces along the roadside to spot and seize mice, ground squirrels, rabbits, reptiles, or other prey.
