Despite blizzards, a broken wagon, and the loss of the coffin, Call finally fulfills the promise to Gus, burying him to the Pecan Orchard where he shared time with his true love Clara, a journey of some three thousand miles. Call returns to Lonesome Dove after the burial, reunites with his former cook and on his walk out of town, a reporter recognizes him and tries to interview him about his remarkable feats. Call ignores the reporter's questions, aside from ironically agreeing with him that he was a "man of vision" and walks away.
