Description
Original Fine Art Photography and digital painting by Donna Kennedy-
During a windy March snowstorm I spotted these Mountain Bluebirds looking for shelter in my Cleveland Pear tree. I grabbed my coat and camera and was able to get a few shots. My camera and I were wet from the snow but was glad to see these beautiful birds. It was almost a whiteout and if I were seen by my neighbors they now think I am crazy! :) Photographed in Cedar City, Utah...
The powder-blue male Mountain Bluebird (Sialia currucoides) is among the most beautiful birds of the West. Living in more open terrain than the other two bluebirds, this species may nest in holes in cliffs or dirt banks when tree hollows are not available. It often seeks its food by hovering low over the grass in open fields. During the winter, Mountain Bluebirds often gather in large flocks, even by the hundreds, sometimes associating with Western Bluebirds.
Mountain Bluebirds are fairly small thrushes with round heads and straight, thin bills and are bright blue and somewhat lighter underneath. Adult females have duller blue wings and tail, grey breast, grey crown, throat and back.
It is the state bird of Idaho and Nevada. 0124
