Description
Original Fine Art Photography by Donna Kennedy..
I was taking some photos of these beautiful summer Globe Mallow flowers when I noticed something moving, as I took a closer look I saw a pupa with this butterfly slowly emerging. When it first came out it was all wrinkled, and stayed perched on these flowers while the wings could unfurl, dry and harden. I had to leave so I never did get to see this new swallowtail make it's maiden flight, but it was exciting to see nature unfold before my eyes! Photographed in Torrey Utah in July...
Swallowtail butterflies belong to the Papilionidae family and encompass over 550 individual species. They can be found on every continent in the world but they are most common in warm regions like the tropics. The largest butterfly in the world, the birdwing, is a swallowtail.
