To conserve water all the pools and fountains were drained...
Hearst Castle is located near the unincorporated community of San Simeon, California, approximately 250 miles from both Los Angeles and San Francisco.
The newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst started to build a fabulous estate on his ranch land overlooking the village of San Simeon in 1919. He called the estate "La Cuesta Encantada" - Spanish for The Enchanted Hill. By 1947, the hilltop complex included a twin-towered main building, three sumptuous guesthouses, and 127 acres of terraced gardens, fountains, pools, tennis courts, movie theatre, airfield and the worlds largest private zoo. Zebras and other exotic animals still roam the grounds. Hearst would fly many of the top Hollywood and political elites to the castle for formal dinners, Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Joan Crawford, James Stewart, Bob Hope, Winston Churchill and Charlie Chaplan to name a few.
Hearst Castle joined the National Register of Historic Places on June 22, 1972 and became a United States National Historic Landmark on May 11, 1976.
