Description
Original Fine Art Photography by Donna Kennedy..
Lots of Pogonip was in the air on this very cold winter December morning with temps below zero near Truckee, California. The Sun had burned most of it off by the time I took this photo, but I have to say it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen--sparkling diamonds in the air!
The word was coined by Native Americans to describe the frozen fogs of fine ice needles that occur in the mountain valleys of the western United States in December. The Shoshone Native Americans called it "frozen death" because it took so many lives from upper respiratory infections. Pogonip only forms under specific conditions, the humidity has to be near 100% as the air temperature drops to way below freezing, allowing ice crystals to form in the air. The ice crystals will then settle onto surfaces.

Very impressive photograph capturing the early morning frost in the air, with great light and shadows, perspective, and clarity of the ice and snow, Donna! Nice work! F/L
