The Black Phoebe (Sayornis nigricans) is a dapper flycatcher of the western U.S. with a sooty black body and crisp white belly. Black Phoebe’s are a passerine bird in the tyrant-flycatcher family. The black phoebe breeds in the west and southwest United States, Mexico and Central America, and parts of South America. In Oregon it is found in river valleys on the Pacific coast, and in California on the western side of Coast Ranges. It breeds throughout the Colorado River valley and occasionally is found to the north in southern Nevada and southwestern Utah, as well as Arizona and central New Mexico.
They sit in the open on low perches to scan for insects, often keeping up a running series of shrill chirps, and will catch much of their food by flycatching (flying out from a perch to grab insects in mid-air). They will also glean insects from plant foliage, or skim the water's surface to pick up aquatic insects or small fish.
Black Phoebes use mud to build cup-shaped nests against walls, overhangs, culverts, and bridges. Black Phoebes are monogamous and frequently raise 2 broods of young during a breeding season. Look for them near any water source from small streams, to suburbs, all the way to the salt-sprayed rocks and cliffs of the Pacific Ocean.
