A young Cooper's Hawk taking off and on the hunt for prey. Reno, Nevada
Cooper's Hawk-Accipiter cooper
A medium-sized hawk of the woodlands. Feeding mostly on birds and small mammals, it hunts by stealth, approaching its prey through dense cover and then pouncing with a rapid, powerful flight. Females are larger and bulkier than males, juveniles differ from adults. In the field they can be hard to identify between the Sharp-shinned Hawk as they look very similar.
