The pinyon or piñon pine (Minus edulis) group grows in southwestern North America, especially in New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. The nut of this little tree, eaten raw or roasted, is a favorite wild food of the Southwestern Indians. Prehistoric Indians used the pitch (resin) to fasten stone arrowheads and knives to wooden shafts and handles, and to repair broken pots. Navajos waterproof baskets with it. Pitch can also be chewed as gum, if it is hard enough when removed from the tree.
