A pair of these geese live at Virgina Lake in Reno, Nevada. One of the local residents purchased them as chicks and released them at the lake, that was many years ago..
Pomeranian goose (Pommerngans) The Pomeranian Goose originates from North East Germany. It is the only descendent of the European Greylag specifically bred for a single-lobed paunch. In Europe it is found in Grey and White but the most popular and common form is the Saddleback, which is the variety mainly found in the United States, in both Buff and Grey. These geese are quite social and "chatty." While some Pomeranians are docile, others may respond aggressively. Pomeranians tend to greet visitors noisily, so they make good watch (sentinel) birds. The "teeth" you see in the photo aren't the same as the things you and I carry around in our gums. Unlike lizards and mammals, somewhere during their evolution birds lost the ability to produce enamel. Enamel is the tough white stuff that coats our teeth and which makes them so hard. So those goose teeth won't be as hard as your own but they would still come in handy cutting through things like grass. They would also let the goose get a better grip on slippery things like snails. What you see is a row of sharp points, or serrations, inside the beak. Scientists have a word to describe those serrated "teeth", they call them tomia.

Call them what you will, those teeth make for a painful bite, as I can attest firsthand! Lovely closeup, Donna!
