Papilio rutulus, the western tiger swallowtail, is a common swallowtail butterfly of western North America, frequently seen in urban parks and gardens, as well as in rural woodlands and riparian areas. The Western Tiger Swallowtail closely resembles its counterpart, the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. It is a striking butterfly, with impressive large yellow and black wings, and spots of blue and orange near its tail. The wingspan is in the 2 1/4" - 3 7/8" range. Life span is about 6-14 days.
The adults feed on nectar from a variety of plants so if you live in the West, keep your eyes open for this beautiful and popular butterfly in your own garden.
