The Fall colors were just starting in the Durango area, so I took a drive up to Silverton in the San Juan Mountain range. Several of the mountain passes had an elevation of over 10,000 ft and some of the Aspen groves had already lost their leaves, but as I kept driving I found many areas that were in their full Autumn glory. With the morning Sun behind these trees I stood in a warm golden glow, I love this time of year!
Silverton Colorado is a National Historic Landmark, part of the San Juan Skyway (with the Million Dollar Highway connecting Silverton to Ouray), home to Animas Forks and the Alpine Loop, and the summer destination for the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad train ride. Secluded at 9,318 feet, a visit to Silverton is one that you will not forget any time of year. A perfect combination of supreme natural beauty and magnificent Victorian charm.
