Description
Original Fine Art Photography by Donna Kennedy...
Photographed in Reno, Nevada-texture from the Daily Texture added for an artistic enhancement..
Northern Flickers (Colaptes auratus) are large, brown woodpeckers with a gentle expression and handsome black-scalloped plumage. On walks, dont be surprised if you scare one up from the ground. Its not where you would expect to find a woodpecker, but flickers eat mainly ants and beetles, digging for them with their unusual, slightly curved bill. When they fly you will see a flash of color in the wings, yellow if you are in the East, red if you are in the West, and a bright white flash on the rump.

I like how the focus is on the flicker, and the way you used the same colors in the gentle background with its delicate grasses.

Stunning image, Donna. Great light. I love these characters. Mostly ours here in WA are red-shafted, but we do get an occasional yellow-shafted. LF+
