On a beautiful Summer morning at Rancho San Rafael Park I was walking by Herman’s Pond and noticed several men by the edge of the water so as I got closer I saw they had a large bull frog in a bucket. I have noticed many big frogs in the pond but one always got my attention as he was so big so I nicknamed him King of the Pond. Sadly on this day the King was captured and I asked the men what they were going to do with him, and they said they would turn him loose which I was happy to hear. I asked if I could get a picture before they let him go. After getting a few shots I waited to make sure the King was set free back into the water. Being held shows the size of how big he is.
American Bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) The baritone call of the bullfrog is so deep and resonant, it resembles the mooing of a cow, hence its name. Only males emit this trademark "jug-o-rum" bellow, and their choruses can be heard during the day or night. The largest of all North American frogs, this giant can grow to a length of 8 inches or more and weigh up to 1.5 pounds. Even the tadpoles of this species can reach 6.75 inches in length. Bullfrogs are typically green or gray-brown with brown spots and have easily identifiable circular eardrums, or tympanum, on either side of their heads. Nocturnal predators, they will ambush and eat just about anything they can fit in their ample mouths, including insects, mice, fish, birds, and snakes. They sit quietly and wait for prey to pass by, then lunge with their powerful hind legs, mouths open wide.
