On an early Autumn morning at a local park I was able to get a fairly close shot of this male California Quail before it wandered off into the bushes, they are usually very elusive. Reno, Nevada
The California Quail is a handsome, round soccer ball of a bird with a rich gray breast, intricately scaled underparts, and a curious, forward-drooping head plume. Its stiffly accented Chi-ca-go call is a common sound of the chaparral and other brushy areas of California and the Northwest. Often seen scratching at the ground in large groups or dashing forward on blurred legs, California Quail are common but unobtrusive. They flush to cover if scared, so approach them gently. 222

Oh, this is a perfect capture of this wonderful bird. I will never forget planting wild flower seed and watching an army of quail marching in formation to eat every last seed. Not a single seed made it! I gave up and just appreciated the quail and their babies for the beauty they provide.
