Female Barbary sheep, photographed at Out of Africa Wildlife Park, Camp Verde, AZ
Also known as the Barbary sheep, the Aoudad (Ammotragus lervia) closely resembles the North American bighorn sheep. It is stocky with a short tan-brown bristly coat. Both sexes have a heavy fringe of hair on their throat that in males extends down the neck to cover the chest and front legs. Both males and females have outward curved horns. Male horns, which can be twice as large as female horns, can measure up to 33 in. The males use their horns in physical dominance fights, ramming heads as they compete for territory and females.
Aoudad have been intentionally introduced to several places outside of their native range. Wild populations can now be found in Spain, Mexico, the Canary Islands, and the American southwest.
Aoudad can be difficult to keep under human care, as they are phenomenal climbers (often found in trees) and can leap six-foot fences with relative ease.
