Pink Wisteria in full bloom at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno, Nevada
Wisteria is a genus of about five to seven species of deciduous, woody vines in the Fabaceae (pea/bean) family. The charms of Wisteria are almost impossible to resist. Lounging over a fence or pergola, it will beckon to you with it's sweet perfume. Before you know it, the nodding, pendulous blooms have hypnotized you. The plant is available in purple, violet, pink or white.
The world's largest known wisteria is in Sierra Madre, California, measuring more than 1 acre in size and weighing 250 tons. Planted in 1894, it is of the 'Chinese lavender' variety.
