The Captain's cottage, a scene from one of my favorite old movies “The Trouble with Harry”
Greenwood Lake, Woodbury, Vermont.
A 1955 comedy/mystery film by Alfred Hitchcock, did not do well at the box office, but remained one of Hitchcock’s favorite films. Filming locations include Barre, Woodbury, Morrisville, and Craftsbury Vermont.
Starring John Forsythe, Edmund Gwenn, Jerry Mathers (Leave It to Beaver) and Shirley MacLaine’s film debut.
A Few Interesting Facts: While on location in Vermont during filming a bracket holding an 850-pound VistaVision camera unit snapped. The unit plummeted to the ground, clipping Hitch in the shoulder and pinning a crew member to the ground. Had he been standing a couple of inches over, Hitchcock would have been a goner.
Vermont, of course, is incredibly picturesque, especially in Autumn, and Hitchcock intended to film everything on location. But the weather didn’t always cooperate, so the crew had to build sets at a local gymnasium and partially shoot on sets in Los Angeles. This caused another problem..Fall Leaves. L.A. leaves aren’t really the same as Vermont leaves. So Hitch ended up having boxes of autumn leaves sent from Vermont, then had some assistants painstakingly pin them onto the trees on set.
Hitchcock shows up in most of his movies, if only for a second or two. But this cameo is truly blink-and-you'll-miss-it- he is in a trench coat walking behind a car at the Wiggs Emporium.
