Description
Glowing Nautilus - AI+digital painting by Donna Kennedy-edited in PS and Topaz Studio…
The chambered or pearly nautilus is a cephalopod (a type of mollusk) a distant cousin to squids, octopi, and cuttlefish. Unlike its color-changing cousins, though, the soft-bodied nautilus lives inside its hard external shell. The shell itself has many closed interior chambers or “compartments.” The animal resides in the shell’s largest chamber, while the other chambers function like the ballast tanks of a submarine. This is the secret to how the nautilus swims. The nautilus uses jet propulsion to roam the ocean deep. Unlike other cephalopods, nautiluses are relatively long-lived, reaching ages of 15 to 20 years, or more. They grow slowly, maturing around 10 to 15 years of age, and produce a small number of eggs that require at least a year-long incubation period.
Nautiluses are only found in a very small region of the world, called the Indopacific triangle, and unless we can slow their slaughter, we will lose this 500-million-year-old creature in less than 50 years. The chambered nautilus is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
